Skin Prepartion before makeup, how does that work? What is skin preparation? Skin preparation is the act of applying products prior to applying makeup to help the makeup lay on the skin better.
Why is skin preparation an important step? Addressing any skin care issue with the proper products prior to applying makeup will allow your makeup to lay on your skin better. When the skin is prepped properly makeup will adhere and last longer.
Pick The Proper Moisturizer
Before I begin any makeup services I do a quick analysis of my clients skin condition. Do they have dry skin or oily skin? Is there some flaky spots that need exfoliation? After I’ve had a good look I will start by cleansing the skin of any oil/debris. I then begin using the appropriate lotion and/or exfoliant that’s tailored to my clients skin needs.
Sunscreen, Don't Skip It
If you’re going to be in the sun you’ll definitely need a good sunscreen, one that will offer sun protection and wear well under your makeup. I have tested many sunscreens under my makeup and I’ll list below which one works best for me. I tend to omit sunscreen for clients that are having photos taken as some ingredients in sunscreen can cause flashback. Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen is a really great sunscreen since it’s clear and acts as a makeup primer.
To Prime Or Not To Prime
With so many primers on the market are they really worth it? My answer is sometimes. I know that’s confusing so I’ll explain. The only time I feel primers are necessary is when I have a client who has larger pores, texture or is oily. If you’re adding a primer make sure you layer it on top of your moisturizer and after the moisturizer has had time to soak in. However, if you’re planning on using Unseen Sunscreen you can omit the primer since it’s built into this sunscreen. The primer I prefer to use on my clients and myself is Hourglass Vanish Primer.
Don't Forget To Set
After your makeup is complete don’t forget to set it. Even with skin prepping makeup won’t last without a setting spray. Setting sprays do just what the title suggest. They set your makeup extending the wear time. One that hasn’t failed me is Melanie Mills Hollywood Super Lite Long Lasting Setting Spray.
Now that you know how to properly prep your skin applying makeup should be a breeze. When using any products prior to makeup use them sparingly and give them a few minutes to soak. Too many products or too much of any product will cause makeup to slip. Therefore, your makeup will not stay along or adhere as well.
